Most real estate websites bury their data practices in long legal documents that nobody reads. We think you deserve better than that. This page explains, in everyday language, exactly how IslandSold.com handles your personal information.
IslandSold.com is operated by Dallas King, a REALTOR® with RE/MAX Generation serving Vancouver Island. Dallas also works with a network of strategic referral agents across the island, so depending on your location or property type, you may be introduced to a trusted partner. This is not a corporate portal run by a faceless company. When you create an account or reach out through this site, you are connecting with real, local professionals who take your privacy seriously.
As a BC business, we comply with the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), which governs how private-sector organizations in British Columbia collect, use, and disclose personal information. The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) oversees compliance. We still maintain a formal privacy policy for legal compliance, but this promise is the version we actually want you to read.
What We Collect
We collect only what we need to provide you with a useful property search experience. Here is the complete list:
Account Information
Your name and email address when you create an account. That is all we require.
Search Activity
Your saved searches, saved properties, and property alert preferences so we can send you relevant updates.
Contact Requests
Messages you send through our contact form, including your phone number if you choose to provide it.
Technical Data
Browser type, device type, and general location (city level) for site performance and security.
We do not collect your income, credit score, financial details, social insurance number, or any sensitive personal information.
How We Use Your Data
Your information is used for three purposes, and three purposes only:
- Property search and alerts. We use your saved searches and preferences to send you new listing notifications, price changes, and market updates that match what you are looking for.
- Communication. If you reach out through our contact form or request a property showing, we use your contact information to respond. We will never contact you about unrelated services or pass your details to telemarketers.
- Site improvement. We use aggregate, anonymized usage data to understand which features are helpful and which need improvement. This data cannot identify individual users.
Who Can See Your Information
Your personal information is visible to Dallas King and any strategic referral agent you are introduced to. Strategic referral agents are licensed REALTORS® in the RE/MAX network or other brokerages whom Dallas has personally vetted to serve specific areas or property types on Vancouver Island. If Dallas refers you to a partner agent, you will always be informed, and only the information relevant to your inquiry is shared with that agent.
If you request mortgage information or are connected with one of our trusted mortgage broker partners, your contact details and relevant inquiry information will be shared with that broker so they can assist you. You will always be told who is receiving your information before it is shared.
We do not share, sell, or provide your data to:
- Agents or brokerages outside of our referral network
- Mortgage lenders or insurance companies you have not been introduced to through us
- Marketing companies or data brokers
- Social media platforms
- Any third party for advertising purposes
The only other exceptions are service providers who help us operate the website (such as our email delivery service and hosting provider), and they are contractually required to protect your data and use it only for the specific service they provide to us.
Your Control
You are in charge of your data. Under PIPA (Section 23), you have the right to access your personal information and request corrections. Here is what you can do at any time:
Update Your Info
Edit your profile, email, and preferences from your account settings.
Manage Alerts
Turn property alerts on or off, change frequency, or unsubscribe entirely.
Delete Your Account
Request complete removal of your data by contacting us directly.
Third-Party Services
We use a small number of trusted services to operate the website:
- Victoria Real Estate Board (VREB): Property listing data is provided through the Bridge Interactive API under IDX and VOW agreements.
- Cloudflare: Content delivery and security protection.
- SendGrid: Email delivery for property alerts and contact form responses.
Each of these services processes only the minimum data necessary for their specific function. None of them receive your full profile or browsing history.
Data Security
All connections to IslandSold.com are encrypted using TLS (the padlock icon in your browser). Your password is stored using industry-standard one-way hashing, which means even we cannot see your actual password. We use secure, managed database infrastructure with regular backups and access controls.
No system is perfectly secure, and we are honest about that. What we can promise is that we follow current best practices, keep our software updated, and treat your data with the same care we would want for our own.
Changes to This Promise
If we make meaningful changes to how we handle your data, we will update this page and note the date at the top. For significant changes, we will also notify registered users by email. We will never quietly reduce your privacy protections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does IslandSold.com sell my personal information?
No. IslandSold.com does not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party. Your data is used exclusively to provide real estate search services and, if you choose, to connect you with Dallas King or one of our strategic referral agents for real estate guidance. We have never sold user data and never will.
What happens to my data if I delete my account?
When you request account deletion, we remove your profile, saved searches, saved properties, and contact preferences from our active systems within 7 business days. Some data may persist in encrypted backups for up to 90 days before being permanently purged. We retain no usable record of your account after the deletion process completes.
Do I need an account to search properties on IslandSold.com?
You can browse active property listings without an account, though there is a viewing limit for unregistered visitors. Creating a free account removes that limit and gives you access to additional features like saved searches, property alerts, sold price history, and neighbourhood analytics. Account creation requires only an email address.
Does IslandSold.com share my search history with other agents?
Your search history, saved properties, and browsing activity are visible only to you and to Dallas King. If your inquiry falls within a strategic referral partner’s area of expertise or geography, Dallas may introduce you to that partner, but your browsing history and saved searches are never shared externally. You will always know who you are working with.
How does IslandSold.com handle MLS data privacy?
Property listing data displayed on IslandSold.com comes from the Victoria Real Estate Board (VREB) through the Bridge Interactive API. This data is governed by VREB rules and CREA data distribution policies. We display listing information in compliance with IDX and VOW regulations. Sold and expired property data is available only to registered users who agree to the VOW terms of use, as required by the real estate board.
Can I opt out of property alert emails?
Yes. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link at the bottom. You can also manage your notification preferences from your account settings at any time. Unsubscribing from alerts does not delete your account or saved searches.
Does IslandSold.com use cookies?
Yes, we use essential cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. We also use analytics cookies to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve it. We may use remarketing tools in the future to show you relevant property listings on other platforms. If we do, this page will be updated to reflect that change. You can disable non-essential cookies in your browser settings without affecting core site functionality.
Is my financial information stored on IslandSold.com?
IslandSold.com does not collect or store financial information such as credit card numbers, bank accounts, or income details. Our mortgage calculator tool runs entirely in your browser and does not transmit any financial data to our servers.
